It's Cold Outside

_dsc0877

Golden light comes through my office window and Kosmo has declared this his space.  The window faces the front of the house where he can observe the neighborhood. It's the perfect spot to soak in the sun when it's cold outside.

Dogs come when they are called,

cats take a message

and get back to you.

Look at the expression on his face.  I think he's in sunbathing bliss.

Pet Friendly Home

As you can tell... our pets, Kosmo (our cat) and Kirby (our dog) live a pretty darned good life.  Kosmo sleeps all day, sunbathes on our patio and is in bird watching heaven. Kirby goes on long road trips, camping, fishing, gets on an airplane and flies to Texas, has routine visits to the pet salon and is a chic magnet.  Life is good!

They also live their days waiting for their daily treats.  Kirby has trained the husband well.  They get a treat at specific times of the day and Kirby will remind us if we forget.  I love how dogs have that interal clock (I wish I had one so I wouldn't have to hear the horrible sound of the alarm clock every morning).

Anyway, aren't these treat jars cute? I found them at TJ Maxx and love the little sayings on them.

Kirby's jar -

  • Wanted: for excessive belly rubbing
  • Wanted: for harrassing the family cat
  • Wanted: for chewing up the newspaper
  • Wanted: for chasing the mailman away

Kosmo's jar -

  • Wanted: for just being a fat lazy cat
  • Wanted: for scratching the new sofa
  • Wanted: for excessive lap snuggling
  • Wanted: for being a very finicky eater

If you're a pet lover, I'm sure you can relate to having your own quirky pet language, silly routines and doing everything you can to keep your furry family member as happy as can be!

Dogs Win Our Hearts

Pict0185

Look at this face!

I was itching to photograph something... anything.

I got the bright idea to grab one of Kirby's favorite treats and take this picture.  My poor little model.  He waited patiently for me to snap the photo while making the funniest begging sounds.  I was laughing so hard I could barely hold the camera still long enough to take the photograph.

Was it worth it?  Look at him!  He's the cutest little dog in the whole wide world.  Well, at least in my biased opinion.

Dogs are not our whole life,

but they make our lives whole.

Basking in the Sun

2010-12-31_10

Long winters call for desperate measures sometimes.

I walked up to Kirby basking in the sun. He found the perfect little spot at the top of the stairs where he could curl up and get some rays.  I could hear him snoring and it made me giggle.

I tip-toed up to him and was vewy-vewy quiet. I had my cell phone in my hand and quickly snapped the photo.

He looked so comfortable. He was probably dreaming of his favorite things: going bye-bye to the park, getting his favorite peanut butter treat, or begging for popcorn from us during movie night.  It could have also been dreams of his ultimate daily excitement; his ritual of walking to the mail box with the hubby and "watering" our bushes on the way there and back.

I know exactly how he's feeling.  I love winters - the cozyness, the snowfalls, all that jazz but I definitely love flip-flops, basking in the sun, hanging out on the patio weather even more!

Hang in there little guy, spring and summer will be here soon!

Our Beloved Kirby

Pict0342

Our constant companion.  Next to our feet or on our lap is where you will always find him.  His little sighs says he wouldn't want to be anywhere else but in our home.

Exuberant and full-of-life is the best way I can describe our dog Kirby.  He lives a happy life without prejudice, worry and full of joy.  He reminds us to appreciate the simple things like a walk at the park, a caring touch, selflessness and unwavering loyalty.  Simply put... he has made us better people.

In the book Marley & Me the author writes, "A dog judges others not by their color or creed or class but who they are inside.  A dog doesn't care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull.  Give him your heart and he will give you his.  It was really quite simple, and yet we humans, so much wiser and more sophisticated, have always had trouble figuring out what really counts and what does not."

I believe it is our responsibility as pet owners to make their lives richer with reciprocal love and affection.

Holiday Hazards

Pict0227

I was reminded that there's a greater risk for fires during the holidays.  If your husband's inner Clark Griswold personality comes out, he may be tempted to overload the electrical outlets with all the Christmas lights. More candles are being enjoyed this time of year adding great risk for fires if not blown out correctly.  Of course always use caution and keep children and pets away from lit candles.

Are you wondering what the cat has to do with this topic?  Meet Kosmo, our ten year old cat.  He spent one of his nine lives because of me!  Let me paint the picture.  Kosmo had just woken up from a long nap and was walking around without a care in the world... he happened to walk a little too close to a lit candle and well... you can imagine the rest.  His tail touched the flame and it caught fire!!  Yes, his tail was on fire!  The tip of his tail was a little charred but he survived like a champ; after all he has eight more lives to go!

Stay safe.  Beware of lit candles and long fluffy tails. :-)

Memories Never Fade

Kramer

I'll start with the day his life ended, because that is what is engraved in my mind.  We took him to the veterinarian, with a glimmer of hope but knowing deep down that the chances were extremelly slim.  When we decided that the best thing to do for him was to put him down, our hearts sank.  The vet gave us a few minutes to say our goodbye and mentioned the injection would take effect fast. Without thinking, I immediately put my hand on his heart; I wanted to feel his heart beating until it stopped.  That was my way of being there for him and comforting him. I remember thinking... "we're here with you buddy". The injection went in and within a few fleeting minutes he was gone. Kramer wasn't in any pain anymore.  I heard his last breath and my hand felt his last heart beat.  We walked out of the veterinarian's office crying and with our hearts completely broken.

Dogs do that to us.  But before they leave us they fill our lives with so much love that their memories eases the void.  They know nothing other than to love us unconditionally.  They make us laugh and comfort us when we need it the most. We still miss him, but years later we reminisce and have warm and funny stories to tell about our dear Kramer.  Our beautiful and kind german shepherd.

Grief is the price we pay for love but fortunately our wonderful memories never fade.
